Why dental hygiene matters

Good oral hygiene helps keep your teeth and gums healthy. Professional cleaning removes plaque and hardened deposits called tartar, which brushing alone cannot remove. Your hygienist can also help you improve your daily cleaning routine.

What your appointment includes

Care is tailored to your individual needs and may include:

• Scale and polish: removal of plaque and tartar, with polishing where appropriate.
• Prophy Jet polishing: air polishing to help remove surface stains, such as those caused by tea and coffee, where suitable. This removes staining rather than changing the natural colour of your teeth.
• Personalised advice: practical guidance on brushing and cleaning between your teeth, including choosing suitable interdental brushes or floss.

Looking after your gums

Healthy gums are an important part of keeping your teeth. If you notice bleeding when brushing, persistent bad breath or changes in your gums, arrange a dental assessment. Your dentist and hygienist can advise on the care you need.

How often you need hygiene appointments depends on your gum health and individual needs. We will recommend an interval suitable for you.
